EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation & Re-processing) is a therapeutic approach that has been recommended by NICE (National Institute for Clinical Excellence) for treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and has also proven effective in relieving other anxiety-related conditions and physical pain.
EMRD has been developed by an American clinical psychologist Dr Francine Shapiro in late 1980s. This therapy appears to directly impact on the brain's information processing function and helps to relieve the intense emotion of traumatic and distressing experiences. EMDR employs eye movements and also sometimes tapping on both sides of body.
In addiction treatment, EMRD is helpful in healing traumatic past experiences that may still be impacting on the individual's recovery. Please note that EMDR practitioners are likely to refuse to treat clients who are actively using alcohol or drugs.
